Solar Quotes: How to Win Without Dropping Your Price

The customer lines up three quotes side by side and looks at the total. But in solar, the total is the least meaningful number of them all.

Quick answer

Solar quotes are lost because they get compared on the total, while the variable that decides value is payback time: a system costing 15% more that produces more and lasts longer pays for itself sooner. A quote that convinces shows three numbers beyond the price โ€” estimated annual savings on the bill, the deduction in euros for that specific case, and years to payback, which for a 6 kWp residential system typically falls between four and six. You then have to state what the cheaper quotes omit: grid connection paperwork, warranties, monitoring and maintenance. The objection "I have a cheaper quote" is handled by asking to see it and comparing line items, because the differences almost always sit in modules, storage, inverter and included paperwork.

In solar the customer does something predictable: they gather three quotes, line them up and look at the last line. It is the natural behaviour of someone with no tools to judge anything else โ€” and giving them those tools is the job of whoever writes the quote.

Why the total is the wrong number

A solar system is not a purchase, it is an investment: it produces a measurable return every year for twenty years. Two systems with different totals can have opposite economics, because what counts is real output, component lifespan and what happens when something fails.

A system costing 15% more that produces more and carries better warranties pays for itself sooner. Until the quote shows that, the customer has no way of knowing โ€” so they pick the one number they understand.

The three numbers that belong next to the price

6 kWp system with battery storageโ‚ฌ14,000
50% deduction (primary residence)โ€“ โ‚ฌ7,000
Estimated annual saving on the billโ‰ˆ โ‚ฌ1,200
Return on investment4โ€“6 years

These are example figures, to be calculated on the customer's real consumption โ€” and it is precisely the fact that they are theirs that makes them convincing. The shift is not rhetorical: you move from "it costs fourteen thousand euros" to "I break even in five years and then generate free power for another fifteen".

Stating what is not included

This is the move that looks counter-intuitive and shifts the comparison most. A quote that explicitly lists grid connection paperwork, component warranties, monitoring and maintenance forces the customer to ask the others for the same items.

Nine times out of ten they discover the cheaper quote did not include them, and that the price difference was exactly that. At that point the comparison is no longer between two totals: it is between two offers, and yours is legible.

"I have a cheaper quote"

The worst answer is to match it. The right answer is to ask to see it and compare line items, because in solar the differences almost always sit in four places:

  • Modules. Power, output retention over time, manufacturer warranty.
  • Battery storage. Present or absent, and at what capacity: half the difference often sits here.
  • Inverter. The component replaced first, and where it is easiest to save.
  • Paperwork. Grid connection, registration, document handling: if not included, it comes back to the customer as time or cost.

The weeks after

The decision cycle is long: the investment is significant, it involves several people in the household, and it almost always passes through comparison. During those weeks most deals are not lost to a no โ€” they fade into silence.

Follow-up exists to give a new reason to reopen the conversation: the updated calculation, a reference from a similar installation nearby, installation availability. Done by hand it gets forgotten in the busy months, which is when it is needed most: that is why it has to be automated, as we describe in CRM for solar installers.

In 2026 there is also a real deadline to use without alarmism: under current Italian law the rates drop from 2027, and the 65% being discussed does not cover photovoltaic. The full picture is in solar tax incentives 2027.

In summary

Three numbers next to the price, excluded items stated in writing, the price objection handled by comparing line items rather than totals, and a follow-up that covers the weeks of the decision. None of the four touches your price list.

If you want to know how many quotes you are losing to silence โ€” which is the first number to have โ€” that is the work we do on marketing for solar installers.

How many quotes have been sitting still for over a month?

In 30 minutes we look at the deals left hanging and which can be reopened, and with what argument.

Frequently asked questions about solar quotes

Because they get compared on a number that is not the right one. The customer lines up three quotes and looks at the total, while the variable that decides value is the return on investment: a system costing 15% more that produces more and lasts longer pays for itself sooner. A quote that does not show payback time leaves the customer with the only criterion they know โ€” price.

Three numbers beyond the price: estimated annual savings on the electricity bill, the tax deduction in euros for that specific case, and payback time. For a 6 kWp residential system payback typically falls between four and six years. You should also state the items that cheaper quotes leave out: grid connection paperwork, warranties, monitoring and maintenance.

By asking to see it, and comparing line items instead of totals. Price differences in solar almost always sit in four places: power and quality of the modules, presence and capacity of battery storage, the inverter, and what is included in the paperwork. A like-for-like comparison moves the conversation from price to value, and it is the only ground where you can win without cutting.

The decision cycle is long because the investment is significant and involves several people in the household: it is measured in weeks rather than days, and almost always passes through comparison with two or three other quotes. That time has to be actively covered with scheduled contacts: without follow-up most deals die of silence, not of an explicit no.

Yes, but as an option with its own numbers alongside, not as a line that inflates the total. Storage falls under the same Italian deduction as the system and is also eligible on existing installations, so presenting it with its own separate payback lets the customer evaluate it rather than perceive it as a price increase.
